ART DECO

Art Deco movement from 1925 - 1940. Manly influenced the architecture of most American cities and had an impact on fashion, art, and furniture, too.

However the movement was started in France and it was the Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs in Paris 1925 which was the most influential of the many exhibitions of the Art Deco movement. Again a short lived movement but one of the biggest influences of it time.

In the exhibition itself the biggest achievement was the The Hôtel d'un Collectionneur designed by Pierre Patout. The building housed a suite of elegant rooms conceived by the leading French furniture maker Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann.  Using high quality craftsmanship with exotic woods and expensive materials ( Shagreen, enamel, ivory, ebony and mother-of-pearl) in their designs.

American architecture was hugely influenced by the Art Deco movement and the New York's Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building are just two examples of this.

Art Deco owed something to several of the major art styles of the early 20th century. These formative influences include the geometric forms of Cubism. The machine-style forms of Constructivism and.Futurism, and the unifying approach of Art Nouveau. Its highly intense colours may have stemmed from Fauvism.

This was the Machine Age, and typography began to take on an industrial, futuristic - almost robotic - appearance. The final effect was a streamlined, elegant looking font.

Travel transportation was heavily marketed - especially that of trains, ocean liners, planes and cars.
The graphic imagery on Art Deco posters was streamlined and angular - faces and bodies for example, were not very detailed.
Instead human forms took on more of a futuristic look - flat, angular features and elongated, straight-lined bodies.
