Memphis Group

Memphis Group

Kitsch (loanword from German, also called cheesiness and tackiness) is a low-brow style of mass-produced art or design using popular or cultural icons.

So with that said The Memphis Group was a gathering of young hip Italian designers and architects who created a series of highly influential products in the 1980's.

The founding member Ettore Sottsass thought that the group could bring New International Design to the world instead of the drab black furniture of the 1970's that lacked personality and individualism.

Together the group came up with the name Memphis when listening repeatedly to the Bob Dylan song  ''Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again''.

The group took influences from the Art Deco and Pop Art styles such as the 1950's Kitsch and futuristic themes.

While a short lived group and now referred to as a fad design, at the time was a hip cool new take on the design front. Its said to have influenced things like Graphic Design,  restaurant design, fabrics and furnishing.

of the pieces were made from brightly, colourful laminates. Shiny and easy to clean but not really stuff made to last.......
